Group Programs

Alison Hicks is currently offering two group programs that can be taken sequentially or individually. The first program Polyvagal, Understanding the Nervous System is designed to help you begin to understand the influence of your nervous system on functioning, specifically mental health. The second program Resource Tapping is designed to teach you practical skills to rebalance your Nervous System by combining imagination and creativity with Bilateral Stimulation.

Polyvagal, Understanding Your Nervous System

The brain, which is part of the nervous system, carries your thoughts, feelings and emotions, and controls most of the functions of your body, including movement and what you see, hear, feel, taste, smell and say. This program is designed to help you Understand Your Nervous System and its impact on Mood, Behaviour, Emotions, Body and Interpersonal Relationships.

You will learn:

- How to maximize your knowledge of the Nervous System to improve your relationship with Self and Others

- About your Nervous System and the unconscious processes that influence your behavior, mood and thoughts.

- To develop practical skills for mapping your Nervous System response pattern

- The role of the Autonomic Nervous System and its function in safety and survival

- The impact of early childhood development on Nervous System responses (Trauma, Depression, Anxiety, Addiction)

- How your Nervous System influences your reactions in your relationships with others, including parenting

As the Nervous System begins to feel safer, thoughts, emotions, sensations and behaviours change automatically. The goal of therapy then is to help your nervous system to feel safe.

What if I feel uncomfortable in a group

This is an Educational Group Program where you will be taught about the Nervous System along with mapping skills to better understand your own Nervous System and its impact on mental health.

You will not be asked to share your story in this group. The purpose of the group is to provide you with skills to prepare you for individual therapy. At the end  of the program you will be able to take your increased knowledge about your nervous system and the maps you have created to any psychologist that you choose to work with. If you are currently on a waiting list to see a psychologist this group provides an excellent opportunity to begin your healing journey.

Sessions may incur a rebate from Medicare if you have a Group Mental Health Plan. If you are eligible for an Individual Mental Health Plan you will also be eligible for 10 group work sessions in a calendar year. Speak to your doctor about a referral.
